Nelson Mandela | A 30th Anniversary

Thirty years ago this year, in 1994, Nelson Mandela historically became South Africa’s first black president. To celebrate this momentous event we will be exhibiting a collection of art by Nelson Mandela created by him in his 80’s and launched by Anna and Laura (Directors of Belgravia Gallery) in 2003. His iconic piece ‘Hand of Africa’ was featured life-size on the front page of The Times when it was launched – this work will feature as part of the exhibition.

These simple yet powerful works were drawn by Mandela after his release from Robben Island and time as President of South Africa. The show includes colourful sketches of his time on Robben Island and meaningful handwritten motivations where he says:

In these sketches entitled: My Robben Island, I have attempted to colour the island sketches in ways that reflect the positive light in which I view it. This is what I would like to share with people around the world and, hopefully, also project the idea that even the most fantastic dreams can be achieved if we are prepared to endure life’s challenges.”
