(1923 - 1997) American pop artist Roy Lichtenstein began his career by borrowing images from comic books and advertisements in the early 1960s. This then moved to encompass those of everyday objects, artistic styles, and art history. Along with persons such as Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns (among others), Lichtenstein became a leading figure in the new art movement. Alike to the style of comic strips, Lichtenstein used words to express sound effects. He developed a detached, mass-produced effect by outlining areas of primary colour with thick black lines and by using a technique that simulated benday screening (a dot pattern used by engravers).
