Robert Indiana

(1928 - 2018)

Born in 1928, Indiana studied in Chicago, Maine and Edinburgh before moving to New York City in the 1950s. In New York, Indiana began making art with distinctive imagery drawing on commercial art approaches blended with existentialism. Gradually he moved toward what he has called ‘sculptural poems’ and he became part of the Pop Art movement.

Indiana's work often consists of bold, simple, iconic images, especially numbers and short words. He is best known for his iconic LOVE, later adapted to spell out the word HOPE, reproductions of which helped fund President Barack Obama's presidential campaign.
