Jan Coutts

New Zealander Jan Coutts moved to London to study at Camden Art School, Central St Martins and the Royal College of Art. Her portrayals of the animals that inhabit the African plains are inspired by her travels to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation areas of Tanzania.

With an experimental approach, Coutts mixes layers of texture to capture speed, movement, light and pattern in her personal view of the wild. Coutts’ original work on bark cloth, using clay, earth and ash images creates a unique way of expressing the ultimate timelessness of savannah life.
