A simple yet powerful drawing of a dove shown in mid-flight with outstretched wings, carrying an olive branch.
Picasso was a Communist sympathiser, and as such he would customarily donate an original drawing to the Peace Movement and give them the authority to print it in a limited edition. Once printed, Picasso would sign them and the Peace Movement was free to sell them. This was Picasso’s method of contributing to the Peace Movement in lieu of money.
The symbol of the dove has been adopted by many campaigners for peace. As well as being powerful symbols of peace – Imagery around Doves had great significance for Picasso and were very much part of his life – They were frequent visitors to his homes in France and also aroused him to his childhood memories of his father at work as an artist.
