Ruskin Spear CBE, RA (1911-1990) was an English painter and his work is represented in the Tate Gallery. One of Britain’s best loved artists of the twentieth century, Spear was a towering genius in the art of narrative painting. His works were always eagerly anticipated at the summer exhibition where he enjoyed the thrill of shocking his audience. Spear never compromised on the quality of drawing and painting and often derided the emptiness of much contemporary and abstract painting.
