New First World War memorial unveiled

(August 2014) A new war memorial has been unveiled in Slough as part of the borough's First World War centenary commemorations.

On Saturday, August 2 at 11am, the Mayor of Slough, Cllr Shafiq Chaudhry, revealed the new feature at the junction of High Street and Windsor Road.

Cllr Chaudhry said: "Nearly 100 years ago, Britain declared war and men from across Slough and across the country took up arms and gave their lives.

"100 years later we are commemorating their sacrifice, their courage and the lives they and those left behind had in our town so long ago.

"Slough's new war memorial is a testament to all those who have fallen, then and since, and it is right it is at the centre of our commemorations next month."

Ian Thomson's sculpture can be seen on show at Belgravia Gallery.

The memorial, at the junction of High Street and Windsor Road, Slough, will be built up and unveiled this weekend as part of Slough Borough Council’s centenary events.

Mayor of Slough, Cllr Shafiq Chaudhry, said: “Slough’s new war memorial is a testament to all those who have fallen, then and since and it is right it is at the centre of our commemorations.”

Cllr Chaudhry will unveil the new structure at 11am on Saturday, August 2.

The memorial site will also host Monday’s vigil at 10pm, where lit candles will be extinguished one by one in the run up to 11pm – the exact time Britain declared war 100 years earlier.

The extinguishing of the candles is inspired by the quote from the 1914 British Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey.

Before War was declared, he said: “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our life-time”.
